No local council can be worthy of its name if it does not devote as much energy as can be afforded on initiatives other than the run of the mill activities enshrined in the local councils act.

Our local council is proud of being extremely active in the education field in particular. The council, through it’s education sub-committee, organizes courses, cultural activities, coordination and/or promotion of initiatives undertaken by the various Birkirkara organizations, liaison with schools, both primary and secondary in Birkirkara, help with voluntary work, and the regional library (see regional library for more information).

The sub-committee for Education and Culture is made up of:

Saviour Demicoli Counsellor and ex-head of school (chaiperson)
Antoinette Tabone Counsellor and director of a business concern
Mario Mallia Counsellor and deputy head of school
Philip Xuereb Teacher and writer and historian
Lino Vella Pensioner and ex-civil servant
Joseph Sammut Ex-director for education
Grech Charles Teacher and youth worker in charge of the Youth Empowerment Centre

The council has over the years invested in a number of courses that have been well received. Courses commencing last October included

- Lace Making (Bizzilla)
- Parenting skills
- Italian
- French
- Computing
- Keep Fit.
